Day 1: Independent morning arrivals in Stockholm or second day in Stockholm if you have chosen the pre-tour optional night . (In which case, your 3/4-star hotel is a stone's throw from the Central Station, arrival and departure point for main line trains and Arlanda and Skavsta airport connections.) The hotel is also close to Drottningsgatan (« Queen's Street »), Stockholm's main thoroughfare, with its many shops, bars and restaurants.
Meeting point for all in front of the hotel at 1:30pm and walk across the road to the station where an Inter-City train will be waiting for you for the first leg of the journey - to Östersund. You'll be heading northwestwards across central Sweden and arriving there around 7:30pm. After a short walk (300m), check-in at a three-star hotel followed by a simple buffet dinner in the hotel. Day 2: After a buffet breakfast, departure at about 10:00am via railcar northwards to Hoting in southern lapland, where you will stop for lunch. After lunch, the train continues north to Storuman, where you arrive at about 4:00pm. You have a short walk through the snow-covered town to a 3/4-star hoel.
You dine together at the hotel this evening. Day 3: After a hearty Scandinavian buffet breakfast, re-board the train for a trip through the forests to Arvidsjaur, where you will make a stop for lunch (not included). After lunch, continue northwards to the Artic Circle and make a short stop to commemorate the event, before arriving at Jokkmokk at about 6:00pm.
The three/four-star hotel is about a 15-minute walk from the station, and a van will transport your luggage to the hotel. Perhaps you'll have a chance of spotting the Northern lights on your walk?
Dinner in the hotel's dining room around a log fire. Day 4: After a buffet breakfast, visit the sami museum close to the hotel. This museum retraces the history, culture and lifestyle of the sami people in the far north.
After lunch (not included), your afternoon is free to visit Jokkmokk before rejoining the train at about 4:00pm for Kiruna where you'll arrive in the early evening. After a short walk to a three-star hotel overlooking the station, dinner at the hotel. Day 5: After breakfast, take a short coach trip (20km) to JukkajSärvi for a guided tour of the renowned "Ice Hotel", which changes shape each year!
In the afternoon, board a train in Kiruna for a journey to the port of Narvik on other side of the mountain range that separates Norway from Sweden. On arrival, there is a short coach transfer to the nearby port of Harstad, from which the Hurigruten coastal service arrives and departs.
You'll arrive at about 8:00pm and have dinner at your three-star hotel. Day 6: After an early buffet breakfast, walk the very short distance to the harbor and board a ship for the first day of a coastal cruise southwards through the Lofoten and Vesterålen islands. You'll be able to lunch on board (not included) and after the day at sea you can dine at your leisure (included) before rejoining your cabin that includes shower and WC. Day 7: After breakfast, you'll have the whole day to contemplate the fjords and Torghatten and De Syv Söstre (Seven Sisters) mountains as you continue your progression towards Trondheim. Lunch (not included) and dinner (included) at your leisure. Day 8: You have an early arrival in the port of Trondheim and the day is yours to explore this delightful university town, nestled between fjord and mountain and that benefits from a surprisingly mild climate given its latitude. The Gulf Stream plays an important role in keeping Trondheim relatively mild in winter.
Leave Trondheim on a sheduled train at 4:30pm and you'll once again cross the mountain divide between Norway and Sweden, arriving in Östersund at 8:30pm.
After a short walk to the hotel, evening and dinner free. Day 9: After a buffet breakfast, board the X2000 fast train for Stockholm, arriving at Stockholm Arlanda at 1:09pm and Stockholm Central Station at 1:30pm. |
